Cabinas Mira Olas

Getting here:

Flying to Golfito: SANSA leaves from a separate terminal at the international airport. Nature Air leaves from Pavas airport. The flight takes about 50 minutes and costs $114 one way. SANSA does not transport surfboards that are longer than 6'10". Nature Air reserves the right not to transport your surfboard on the same flight. You can also transport your surfboard to Golfito by bus. Take it to the Tracopa bus station in south-eastern San Jose and it should get to Golfito within less than 24 hours. (Tracopa is pretty reliable.)
From Golfito, take a taxi to Pavones ($70 to $80 for the 1½ to 2 hour ride). A bus to Pavones leaves Golfito at 10 am and at 3 pm. If you get on at the first stop across the street from the Golfito hospital you have a good chance to get a seat. The bus costs about $3/Person plus a fee for the surfboard.
Getting to Mira Olas from the bus stop: If you take the 10 am bus, ride it to the last stop and then walk inland, skirting the soccer field, then turning left away from the soccer field at Bar La Plaza. When you get to the main road, the Mira Olas driveway is diagonally across and to the left. It's a ¼ mile walk from the bus stop to Mira Olas. If you arrive on the evening bus, get off at the main Pavones bus stop "cien (100) metros antes del puente en Rio Claro de Pavones" (Pavones' official name). Our driveway is diagonally across and to the left (a 200 yard walk).
If you go by bus from San Jose and would like to get a reserved seat, try to get your ticket a day ahead at the Tracopa bus terminal on the south-east side of town. If that's not possible, try to be at the bus stop 45 minutes early to get your ticket. Buses tend to leave on time, luggage is loaded 15 to 20 minutes before departure. Have some warm clothes in your carry-on since the road climbs up to more than 10,000 feet. The ticket costs between $10 and $15. There is a morning bus to Golfito leaving at 7 am. I personally prefer taking the 7:30 am express bus (directo) to Paso Canoas (it continues to David, Panama). It only takes as many people as there are seats and it does not stop along the way except for a lunch break. This bus is the most popular and you may not get on if you didn't purchase a ticket ahead of time. Another bus leaves for Paso Canoas at 5 am. It is not an express bus and usually has seats left. The bus ride to Golfito or Paso Canoas takes 6 to 7 hours.. From Paso Canoas a cab costs $50 to $60. If you plan to continue by bus, it's easier from Golfito.
If you are driving from San Jose: The coastal route via Jaco, Quepos, Dominical has recently been finished and is faster than the Interamerican Hwy. via San Isidro if you are starting at the international airport. Going south along the coast, you meet up with the Interamerican hwy. in Palmar Norte. Continue south on the Interamericana until you get to Rio Claro where you turn right in the direction of Golfito. After approximately 10 kilometers, at the bar El Rodeo turn left. There is a sign but sometimes it's so dirty that it is invisible.
The paved road ends at a long metal bridge (formerly ferry crossing) across the Rio Coto. Stay on the main road. There is a stretch of paved road with lots of pot holes before you get to a small village called Conte (you'll see the high school on your right before getting to Conte). Turn right at the Conte general store and about 2 km later turn left and go up the hill. After another 18 km you will get to Pavones. If you are coming in along the beach road, turn left at the school and fishing boats. Shortly thereafter, at the super market/hardware store turn right. If you come in along the upper road keep going in the same general direction past the supermarket. In either case, from the supermarket follow the main road south for another 200 yards and you'll get to our driveway to the left. There's a sign. If you get to the bridge, you've gone too far. It takes an hour and a half to two hours to get to Pavones from the Interamericana. We recommend not to drive at night.
Check with your rental car agency if all the main roads you plan to take are open.
